Final Evaluation

During this assignment I was required to create my own prosthetic piece from scratch, following a chosen theme as well as document the journey on a blog. When I first received this brief I was excited at the thought of being able to sculpt my own facial prosthetic, as having an art background I have been always fond of sculpting and using clay.
Overall I genuinely enjoyed this project, during my sculpt I had moments of unhappiness or discontent with my sculpt, however I kept going and kept making small changes until I knew I was fully happy with the final outcome. After my sculpt had been cast I kept thinking of small things I could have done to make my sculpt stronger, however these feelings were diminished when I finally saw the result of my prosthetic when it was applied to the model. I am pleased that I had a practice prosthetic to paint on, as I was not happy with this outcome at all, after this paint job went wrong my confidence was knocked slightly as I was dedicated to making my final piece look how I wanted it to and was nervous in case it went wrong again. During my practice piece I feel that the colours I had used were a bit too dark, and gave the appliance a 'flat' look, which is the opposite of what i wanted to achieve due to the nature of the look, I tried to apply final bits of texture with my airbrush but I was still not happy with it at all. When it came to painting my final piece I decided to keep it as basic as I could without it looking too plain, I used a much lighter coloured base this time and kept the pre-paint to a minimum, I applied the base coat and black contouring with my airbrush before leaving the rest of the detail after I had applied it to my model. I am glad I made this decision as I could decipher what the final piece would look like much better whilst it was applied. Again I used my airbrush to add a green colour over the black as well as using it as a break up colour between the black and grey, i added hints of white highlighting with my airbrush again in areas such as the cheekbones, under the eye sockets, the edge and tip of the beak, as well as finally using a small brush to paint in the symbol on the forehead. I did debate with my model on the day of the exam on whether to paint the symbol with a florescent green paint I had purchased, however I am glad I decided against this as I feel that the white pops much more on the dark forehead then the green would have.
If I were to do this assessment again, I would make sure to paint the chest of my model, as time had began to run out I painted my models arms as I knew they would be one of the main things on show, as would be very obvious if left unpainted. However during this time my model was still in her clothes and did not have her costume on, when I dressed my model after the assessment was over I realised that the outfit I had chosen had a very deep v-neck top, this meant her entire chest was on show, and I had not had time to paint this. I attempted to hide it used the long hair of the wig and the veil I had chosen, however during movement for the photoshoot with the photographer this chest area kept becoming exposed. This could be solved in the photos by changing some to black and white, however I don't think this would have given the paint job any justice.
I found this whole process extremely enjoyable, although a lot of my make-up work such as work experience has been fashion make-up based, this assignment has given me a boost to seek out and learn more about Special Effects, I would like to take a year out before returning and taking up a course purely based on SFX.
